NYSAHA recognized high school hockey in 1982 but league championship were being held as early as 1972 in Buffalo. NYSAHA divided into two divisions in 2002 as prior to that year, only one championship was awarded. In 2008-09, there was no club state championship. For the 2009-10 season, WNYHSCHL will join AAU.
At Nationals, teams ranked 1–12 all receive first-round byes, with teams ranked 13–20 matching up 20 vs 13 (etc.), for the rights to play in the second-round in pre-determined bracket slots. The New York Collegiate Hockey Association was an intercollegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA 's Second Division. The league was created in 1977 between 6 then-existing SUNYAC schools as well as Buffalo and Elmira. [1]
