The Guards formation was created on 1 January 1975 as the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade (7 SIB) with four officers, five specialists and a few clerks. The Singapore Army is the land service branch of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). The largest of the four branches of the SAF, the Singapore Army traces its origins to the 1st Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (1 SIR), which was formed in 1957, when Singapore was still under British colonial rule.
In 1977 and 1978, 7 SIR and 8 SIR were converted to the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Guards formation. 8 SIR was re-created later as an Infantry battalion. [ citation needed ] On 15 January 1980, the Singapore Army set up the HQ Infantry to oversee all infantry doctrinal and training matters up to the battalion level.
Lim enlisted in the SAF in December 1990 and was commissioned as a Guards officer in August 1991. He served as the Commanding Officer (CO) of the 1st Battalion Singapore Guards from 2003–2005, the Commander of the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade in 2009, the Commander of the 3rd Division from 2011–2013, and the Chief of Staff (General Staff) from 2013–2014.
