In 1924, WIS 54 extended westward to the Mississippi River. This route largely followed its present-day routing. As a result of the extension, it replaced parts of WIS 66 from Wisconsin Rapids to Plover and WIS 52 from Decora Prairie to Black River Falls. [5] By 1931, a portion of WIS 54 between Shiocton and Black Creek was straightened. [6]

Wisconsin is located in the East North Central United States, and is considered to be a part of the Midwest. [3] The state has a total area of 65,496 square miles (169,630 km 2), making it the 23rd largest U.S. State. [4] [5] Of this area, 17% is water, primarily Lake Michigan, Superior, and the many inland lakes in Wisconsin. [6]
The highway turns northward onto Main Street and passes west and north of the University of Wisconsin–Stout campus. WIS 29 turns east onto Stout Road along with US 12 and leaves the city to the east. [5] US 12/WIS 29 proceeds east for about nine miles (14 km) and junctions with Interstate 94 (I-94).
At this point, the two highways then run concurrently southeasterly on a four-lane surface street (East 2nd Street) for 5 miles (8.0 km). After the intersection with Moccasin Mike Road, a seven-mile (11 km) freeway segment begins for US 2/US 53 as the highway leaves the city of Superior together. [5]
[8] [9] In 1937, the rest of WIS 91 was removed in favor of turning this back to local control (replaced by CTH-CC). [10] [11] This time, the route remained decommissioned for around a year. By 1939, WIS 91 was readded right near the location of its second alignment. It traveled from US 51 (now CTH-A) north of Tomahawk to US 8 in Bradley.
WIS 11 begins in Grant County at the freeway carrying US 61 and US 151 and concurrent with WIS 35.WIS 35 turns south to Illinois a half of a mile into the route as WIS 11 meanders to the east to Hazel Green where it picks up WIS 80 north for 3 miles (4.8 km) before turning east again into Lafayette County while WIS 80 continues north along the county line. About four miles (6.4 km) east of Kingston, WIS 44 meets up with WIS 73. WIS 73 north heads to Princeton . It is cosigned with WIS 73, forming a wrong-way concurrency for roughly 1 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (2.4 km) through the unincorporated town of Manchester before WIS 73 cuts south to head to Randolph and Columbus .
