To the Lighthouse is a 1927 novel by Virginia Woolf. The novel centres on the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920. Following and extending the tradition of modernist novelists like Marcel Proust and James Joyce , the plot of To the Lighthouse is secondary to its philosophical introspection.
The film depicts boys and girls stranded on the island together, while in the book there were only boys. In the book, the children elect a leader shortly after being stranded on the island; in the film, the election does not take place until they have already been on the island for several weeks.

Plot. The plot is very small and doesn't provide much background information. While it paints a clear picture of the setting and the inspiration for said setting it barely mentions the books characters. Most characters are mentioned throughout the plot summary, however, most are mentioned only once and some are not mentioned at all.
