The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary [1] is a National Marine Sanctuary in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties on the Central Coast of California. It was designated on October 11, 2024, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The reservation was created by President Ulysses S. Grant, via executive order in 1875 for local Kumeyaay people. [1] Its name comes from the Spanish Coapan, which was what the area west of the San Diego River was called in the 19th century. The dry, mountainous and chaparral lands proved inhospitable. [2]
The preserve is in south-west Santa Barbara County, California, with 8 miles (13 km) of coastline along the Gaviota Coast bracketing Point Conception and 24,000 inland acres (9,700 ha).
