The character Grotbags originally appeared in the Rod Hull television show Emu's World in 1982 and she remained the principal antagonist throughout the rest of the decade in the programme's various other incarnations (Emu's All Live Pink Windmill Show, Emu's Wide World, and 1989's EMU-TV), plus the subsequent animated series Rod 'n' Emu. In 1986, as a child actor, Pinnock starred in the fantasy drama TV serial Mr Magus is Waiting for You, based on the novel by Gene Kemp and following the adventures of four young children who become trapped in the fantasy world of a mysterious magician. Hull first used Emu as a puppet in this show. There are conflicting reports as to how this came about. The 2003 Channel 4 documentary Rod Hull: A Bird in the Hand states that "In fact, Emu was a Channel Nine creation".
