Nouvelle-Aquitaine (French pronunciation: [nuvɛl akitɛn] ⓘ) [3] is the largest administrative region in France by area, spanning the west and southwest of Metropolitan France. The region was created in 2014 by the merging of Aquitaine, Limousin, and Poitou-Charentes in a territorial reform.

The region derives its name from the Santones, an ancient Gallic tribe that once inhabited the area. They were one of the numerous Celtic peoples in Europe before the rise of the Roman Empire . During antiquity, Saintonge was part of the Roman province of Gallia Aquitania , and Saintes became its first capital.
In 1828, a disastrous fire destroyed the weaving looms.In 1835 the company owner, Samuel Rampson Whitty, the founder's grandson, was declared bankrupt. Blackmores of Wilton, Wiltshire, near Salisbury, bought the remaining stock and looms and extended their business to include hand-knotted carpets, which were still called Axminsters.
