The Steelheads play in the Mountain Division of the ECHL's Western Conference since the 2016–17 season. In 1996, the Steelheads were announced as a 1997–98 expansion team by Diamond Sports Management, headed by Cord Pereira, as a member of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL). The Steelheads and the rest of the WCHL joined the ECHL in 2003.
It currently consists of fourteen teams: six in the west, five in the south, two in the midwest, and one in the northeast. As of its 2023 season, the minimum salary for a player was $36,400, [14] [15] while the maximum salary was $200,000, though allocation money can be used to pay player salaries in excess of the maximum. This retirement was ultimately short-lived, as Kawaguchi re-signed with the Steelheads and returned to ice hockey on January 17, 2024. [13] Following his first three full professional seasons in North America, Kawaguchi moved abroad a free agent in signing a one-year contract with Irish based club, Belfast Giants of the EIHL, on July 29, 2024.
