A ghost town is a former community that now has no year-round residents or less than 1% of its peak population. Colorado has over 1,500 ghost towns, although visible remains of only about 640 still exist.
The town was founded as a gold mining camp, after a "rich strike" was discovered west of Fort Collins [1] in September 1886 between the Seven Mile and Elk Horn creeks. [3] [4] This resulted in a rush of miners to the area along Manhattan Creek. [3] [5] The town was platted in 1887 [6] [7] and a post office opened in March of that year.
For a time, the area was known as the Richest Square Mile on Earth, [3] and was the largest urban area of the Colorado Territory in the 1870s. The district was designated a National Historic Landmark on July 4, 1961, for its well-preserved early mining community architecture and history. [2] [4] [5]

Lulu City was a transient mining town in eastern Grand County, Colorado, in the Kawuneeche Valley in what is now Rocky Mountain National Park.The town appeared after silver was discovered in the area in 1879 by prospector Joe Shipler, [2] and was built primarily by the Middle Park and Grand River Land Improvement Company in 1880.
