Poynette was named after Pierre Paquette (1796–1836), an early fur trader and settler of south central Wisconsin. When an application was made for a post office in the settlement, Paquette's name was misread as Poynette, and the post office was mistakenly named "Poynette". The village was then named after the post office.

Poynette High School is a secondary school in Poynette, Wisconsin. The school is part of the Poynette School District. As of the 2017–18 school year, the student enrollment at PHS was 335. [3] It shares its campus with Poynette Elementary School. The school colors are orange and black and the athletic teams are known as the Pumas.
