Rutherford became pastor of Hillcrest Christian Church in Granada Hills in 1987. The church's congregation grew from 350 to 1,000 people by 1995, when the church was united with Baptist Shepherd of the Hills to become the present Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch.
