Primark Limited [6] [7] (/ ˈ p r aɪ m ɑːr k /; trading as Penneys in Ireland) [8] [9] is an Irish multinational fashion retailer with headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, [10] with outlets across Europe and in the United States. The original Penneys brand is not used outside of Ireland because it is owned elsewhere by American retailer JCPenney.
Ryan opened the first Penneys shop on Mary Street in Dublin in 1969. [3] Subsequently, in 1974, he took the model to Britain, initially under the Penneys brand, but following a trademark dispute with the American retailer JC Penney, the shops outside the Republic of Ireland were rebranded as Primark. By 1965, Weston's business had grown to six grocery stores. Four years later, he expanded his business interests with the purchase of a bankrupt department store called Todd Burns, which he renamed Penneys (now known as Primark outside of Ireland). Within a year, four more stores opened, all with a similar discount format.
The former Todd Burns department store is one of the most prominent buildings on the street. It was designed by W. Mitchell and was built in 1905.
