Urdu Science Board (abbreviated as USB) is an academic and literary institution in Pakistan that operates under the National Heritage and Culture Division, Government of Pakistan. It aims to promote scientific and technical knowledge in Urdu language through the publication of books and journals.
The dictionary has been arranged and edited according to the following criteria: All the common words, idioms, proverbs, and modern academic, literary, scientific, and technical terms of the Urdu language have been listed. Only those obsolete words and idioms have been included which are found in ancient books.
The Board was renamed as “Urdu Science Board” in 1984. The Board has published more than 800 books on different science subjects, dictionaries and educational charts. Urdu Science Board has developed Urdu Science Encyclopedia consisting ten volumes. It has been printed on fine art mate paper and contains colour pictures, diagrams and visuals.
To undertake the production of literature in the Urdu language, including books on science and other branches of modern knowledge, the children's literature textbooks, reference works, encyclopaedia, dictionaries, etc. To collect and evolve technical terms relating to various disciplines of knowledge in order to enrich the Urdu language.
It also contains information about science, engineering and technology for research and development of technology. An expanded project of the Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR) and a subsidiary of the Pakistan Science Foundation , it is headquartered in Quaid-i-Azam University campus, Islamabad .
