The Zanzibar Archipelago (Funguvisiwa la Zanzibar, in Swahili, Arabic: أرخبيل زنجبار) is a group of islands off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the sea of Zanj. The archipelago is also known as the Spice Islands. There are three main islands with permanent human settlements, Zanzibar island, Pemba island, and Mafia island.
The population of Pemba Island was 362,166. [51] The largest town on the island was Chake-Chake, with a population of 19,283. The smaller towns are Wete and Mkoani. Chake-Chake is a town located on the Tanzanian island of Pemba and capital of Chake Chake District. It is in the centre of a deep indentation in the west coast called Chake-Chake Bay. Chake-Chake is historically the capital of Pemba Island, [3] and the seat of Pemba's court. Pemba's only airport is 7 km south-east of Chake-Chake.
Njao Island is located off the northwest coast of Pemba Island, one of the two main islands of Tanzania's Zanzibar Archipelago. Together with the larger Fundo Island , which lies immediately to the south, it forms a natural barrier and breakwater for the harbour of the town of Wete , which lies seven kilometres to the southeast.
