Constructed in 1898 as an eight-room inn, Mount Airy Lodge was re-constructed in the 1950s as the Pocono's largest resort. In its heyday in the 1960s and 70's, Mount Airy had more than 890 rooms, indoor/outdoor pools, skiing, snowmobiling, ice-skating, hiking, biking, horseback riding, archery, an 18-hole golf course and paddle ball courts on over 1,000 acres of property.
The cavern is situated 90 metres (300 ft) above the river. It consists of three levels with rock stairways, numerous altars, and small cells, suggested to have been the residence of Saint Maron and his early followers in the fourth century CE, during the foundation of the Maronite Church.
Its summit covers an area of over 12 hectares (30 acres). There are many caves and overhangs on the steep slopes. It is largely surrounded by a lagoon and is a well known tourist attraction. It is also a refuge for two rare plants, the Mandrinette and the Boucle d'Oreille. [citation needed] The peninsula of Le Morne benefits from a micro-climate.
Mount Maroon is one of five peaks in the park, 1994. The park is dominated by the grand twin peaks of Mount Barney. Surrounding these peaks are numerous mountains, steep valleys, caves, deep rock pools and much woodland forest. The park also contains the peaks of Mount Ballow, Mount Ernest, Mount Maroon and Mount May. [citation needed]
