Abū Dāwūd (Dā’ūd) Sulaymān ibn al-Ash‘ath ibn Isḥāq al-Azdī al-Sijistānī (Arabic: أبو داود سليمان بن الأشعث الأزدي السجستاني), commonly known as Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī, was a scholar of prophetic hadith who compiled the third of the six "canonical" hadith collections recognized by Sunni Muslims, the Sunan Abu Dāwūd.
He traveled widely across many countries to collect hadiths of Muhammad to complete his book (Musnad al-Tayalisi). He died in 204 AH and was buried in Basra. He is not to be confused with Abu Dawud al-Sijistani , who is the author of Sunan Abu Dawud , one of the six "canonical" hadith collections .

According to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hammam ibn Munabbih was a disciple of Abu Hurairah. Abu Hurairah is the authority from whom he relates the narrations comprising the sahifah in their isnads (chains of narration), noting "this is what Abū Ḥurayra told us, on the authority of Muhammad the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him". Abu Dawud begins his work with a prologue. According to his prologue, the hadith contained in his work are the soundest hadith on the issues they describe and allow one to base practice off of them. Abu Dawud states that his work has about 4,800 hadith, although manuscripts of the work typically contain a few hundred more than this figure. [33]
