James Tully Beatty (born October 28, 1934, in New York, New York) is a former American track and field athlete and North Carolina politician. He is best remembered as the first person to break the four-minute mile barrier on an indoor track, when he ran 3:58.9 on February 10, 1962, at the Los Angeles Invitational in the Los Angeles Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.
Walkertown was named for Robert Walker Esq. who was living at the site by 1771 after relocating from the original county seat of Richmond which was destroyed by a cyclone. [9] Many of his descendants relocated to the West during the 1850s. Walker's home remained standing through the mid-20th century. [10] The town was incorporated in 1984. [11]
Robert Walker was born on 17 March 1938, as the son of Ronald Robert Antony Walker by his wife Mary Helen Welsh. He was educated at Downside School and Trinity College, Cambridge from where he graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics and Law. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1960 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1982.
