The Northstar Line is a state and federally funded commuter rail line that serves a region from Minneapolis northwest toward the central Minnesota city of St. Cloud.The line began service on November 16, 2009, and runs about half the distance to St. Cloud, terminating in Big Lake, with bus service covering the remaining distance.
The 2006 state legislature, along with city, county and federal governments, provided funding to complete the corridor to Big Lake. [9] Construction began on the maintenance facility near Big Lake station and on the Blue Line light rail extension in September 2007, before full funding for the line had been secured. [5]

In late 2009, Target Field Station was established as the new downtown Minneapolis train station with the first commuter service, the Northstar Line, mostly following the existing Empire Builder to Big Lake. A station at the expansive Foley Boulevard park & ride is considered an infill project for the Northstar Line. [9]
This line has hosted Amtrak's Empire Builder since 1979, and the train makes stops along the Staples Subdivision in St. Cloud, Staples, and Detroit Lakes. Since November 2009, it has also hosted the Northstar Line commuter train, with stops in Fridley, Coon Rapids, Anoka, Ramsey, Elk River, and Northstar's home terminal in Big Lake.
