UK drill is a subgenre of drill music and road rap that originated in the South London district of Brixton from 2012 onwards. [1] [2] [3] While being sonically distinct from Chicago drill music, [4] it embraces its aesthetic and melds it with road rap, a British style of gangsta rap that became popular in the years prior to the existence of drill.
Jyrelle Justin O'Connor was born in Kennington, London on 6 May 1999. His father was Ty Nizzy, a member of the PDC rap group and "an originator of road rap", according to The Guardian. [5] His mother, Dionne Greenland, studied English literature and history while attending university, which Loski said inspired storytelling within his songs. [9]
The name, "Harlem", is a nickname for their local area of Kennington. [4] The police allege that Harlem Spartans is a gang, however this is denied by the group. [8] Harlem Spartans is affiliated with Walworth-based group Moscow17. [9] [4] Australian drill group Onefour cites Harlem Spartans as a major influence in their music. [10]
He would later join the Harlem Spartans collective through a youth centre in Kennington. In 2016, he released "Jason Bourne", which, according to New Wave Mag, certified his place as a well-respected drill artist. [1] In 2019, Blanco released his debut EP, English Dubbed. [5]
