Southern Railway's 1918 facility, named Peachtree Station but known locally as Brookwood Station, has been Atlanta's only long-distance passenger rail stop since 1970. Amtrak took over Southern's Crescent route in the '70s, which (as of 2015) continues to operate between New Orleans and N.Y. City .

In 1965, the Morningside Lenox Park Association (MLPA) was incorporated to fight plans to build I-485 through the neighborhood. By the late '60s, the state had bought property and demolished several homes for road right-of-way. The MLPA banded together with other east Atlanta neighborhoods to block the highway.
