In 1999, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami of Kauai Aadheenam gifted a 1,400 lb, 4 ft tall statue of Ganesha as a Murti for a new Hindu Temple to be constructed in Arizona. In November 2000, The Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona was officially established as a Non-Profit Organization and recognized as a religious organization. [ 4 ]
Some authors have attributed the statue to the transitional period between Kushan art to Gupta art, to the 5th or even 4th century CE. [1] The statue of Ganesha from Gardez is now attributed to the period of Turk Shahis in the 7-8th century CE, rather than to their successors the Hindu Shahis (9th-10th century) as formerly suggested. Thirty-two forms of Ganesha are mentioned frequently in devotional literature related to the Hindu god Ganesha. [1] [2] [3] The Ganesha-centric scripture Mudgala Purana is the first to list them. [4] Detailed descriptions are included in the Shivanidhi portion of the 19th-century Kannada Sritattvanidhi.
Many families worship Ganesha in the form of patri (leaves used for worshiping Ganesha or other gods), a picture is drawn on paper or small silver idols. In some households Ganesha idols are hidden, a feature unique to Ganesh Chaturthi in Goa due to a ban on clay Ganesha idols and festivals by the Jesuits as part of the Inquisition. [43]
A sculpted 6 foot mouse – the vahana (mount) of Ganesha sits in front of the temple. [1] A Nagara-khana – which stores Nagaras (kettle drums) – is situated nearby. A huge Nandi bull sculpture is positioned facing the Lord, just outside the temple gates.
The sculpture, although controversial when purchased in 1966 is now considered part of Toronto's civic heritage. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] The work was originally to cost $120,000; Moore eventually sold the bronze to Toronto for $100,000, on the condition that he could make a second cast for the National Gallery in Berlin.
