Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 – May 15, 1967) was an American realist painter and printmaker.He is one of America's most renowned artists and known for his skill in capturing American life and landscapes through his art.
The painting has been described as Hopper's best-known work [1] and is one of the most recognizable paintings in American art. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Classified as part of the American Realism movement, within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for $3,000.
Hopper completed what is considered his first oil painting, Rowboat in Rocky Cove (1895), at the age of 13. [3] Early nautical works he created during this time include Sailboat (c. 1900) and Tramp Steamer (1908). [2] In the summer of 1912, Hopper began painting in the village of Gloucester, Massachusetts, a town popular with many artists. [4]
