The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large dog breed originally bred in Southern Africa. [1] The original breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo , Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe ), in 1922, and approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1927.

[25] In one study, the Rhodesian Ridgeback had the highest average litter size with 8.9 pups per litter while the Pomeranian and Toy Poodle had the lowest with 2.4 pups per litter. The ridge on the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a distinct characteristic of the breed. The Ridgeback Club's code of ethics states that "ridgeless puppies shall be culled".
