Mingw-w64 is a free and open-source suite of development tools that generate Portable Executable (PE) binaries for Microsoft Windows. It was forked in 2005–2010 from MinGW ( Minimalist GNU for Windows ).

MinGW should be seen as an alternative to Microsoft's compiler, as the APIs it provides are the same, as it uses the same C library. This is very different from Cygwin. MinGW can in no way be said to be a fork of Cygwin. It is MSYS that is a fork of Cygwin. Don't confuse the two. It is perfectly possible to use MinGW without using MSYS.
