Kota Bharu was founded during the late 19th century. Before the establishment, Kota Bharu was home to Kelantan's Royal Palace, then established by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan in 1844 as Kelantan's state capital who wanted the new state capital built in his honour. [2] Prior to this, Kota Bharu was known as Kuala Kelantan.
The Parliament of Malaysia and the official residence of the King are also located in Kuala Lumpur. In 2001, the seat of government was moved from Kuala Lumpur to the planned city of Putrajaya which from then on served as the federal administrative centre, sometimes referred to as the administrative capital.

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) (Malay: Laluan Rel Pantai Timur) is a standard gauge double-track railway link infrastructure project connecting Port Klang on the Straits of Malacca to Kota Bharu in northeast Peninsular Malaysia, connecting the East Coast Economic Region states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan to one another, and to the Central Region of the Peninsula's west coast.
Ketereh is administered by the Ketereh District Council (Malay: Majlis Daerah Ketereh), which was established on 1 January 1979 as the Kota Bharu District Council (Malay: Majlis Daerah Kota Bharu), through the merger of the Kadok, Pangkal Kalong and Peringat Local Councils. [2] In the Malaysian Parliament Ketereh is represented by Khlir Mohd Nor.
