[4]: 2 Minnesota's state parks are spread across the state in such a way that there is a state park within 50 miles (80 km) of every Minnesotan. [5] The most recent park created is Lake Vermilion State Park, created in 2010.

Camping: 2 group camps along the river provide tent camping opportunities for 35-50 people each. Drive-in camping is available for both tents and RVs. There are two main camping areas, one near the river and one on top of the bluffs. Several sites on top of the bluff are accessible via a short (max. 100 yards) walk from a parking area.
Camping: Big Island Campground: 34 wooded sites (17 with electrical hookups), 1 camper cabin. White Fox Campground: 59 open sites (15 electrical). Little Island Pioneer Group Camp: 50 person capacity, tenting only. New York Point Group Camp: Tent or vehicle camping with access to kitchen/mess hall & showers/restrooms. 4 backpacking sites.
The first 2,350 acres (9.5 km 2) of land on which the park is situated were donated to the state by the Saint Louis Power Company in 1915.The park remained generally undeveloped until 1933, when a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp was established on the site.
It is a popular place for birdwatching, picnics, camping, and other typical outdoor recreational activities. To deter overuse of a state park only 20 miles (32 km) from downtown St. Paul, there is no vehicle access to the camping area or swimming beach. The park is located approximately five miles (8 km) south of the town of Afton, Minnesota.

Because the valley is so narrow, the campground sites are staggered on either side of the park road. There are 42 drive-in sites (16 with electrical hookups), six walk-in sites, a camper cabin, and at the end of the park road three group camp sites. There are eight miles (13 km) of hiking trails.
