The Serpentine-Jarrahdale Road District was established on August 8, 1913 with the merger of the Serpentine Road District (1894) and the Jarrahdale Road District (1902). [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] On July 1, 1961, it became a Shire following the passage of the Local Government Act 1960 , which reformed all remaining road districts into shires.
Rob Coales (born 1975/1976) is an Australian politician and the current president of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale since winning a landslide election victory in 2023, becoming the Shire's first directly-elected leader. Byford and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale's only secondary-only school is the government Byford Secondary College, which opened in 2014. The Byford Community Kindergarten was built in 1978. In March 2017, Department of Fire and Emergency Services deemed it high risk to bushfire due to surrounding bushland. It reopened in 2019. [56] [57]
The Saint Stephen's Church in Serpentine is an Anglican church part of the Diocese of Perth's Parish of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. [15] The church's foundation stone was laid by the Bishop of Perth, Charles Riley on 10 May 1913, with the church being consecrated on 6 December 1913. Plans for a stone church in Serpentine dated back to 1885. [16]
