Bryant University athletics started out as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) before it transitioned into Division II. Bryant competed in the NE-10 from the conference's founding in 1980 until 2008 when the university began the transition to Division I. [3] In 2012, Bryant became a full Division I member.
Before becoming the Bryant head coach, Fine was an assistant head coach at Iowa State University. In his third year as Bryant head coach, Fine led the Bulldogs to the playoffs. Fine resigned from his position on December 1, 2016. On January 3, 2017, Bryant University hired of James Perry as the 3rd head coach of the Bulldog football program.

The 2024 Bryant Bulldogs football team represented Bryant University as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association Football Conference (CAA Football) during the 2024 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Bulldogs were led by sixth-year head coach Chris Merritt and played their home games at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
