The Indian Institute of Legal Metrology (IILM) is a statutory body established by the Government of India under the provisions of the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976, and is deemed to have been established under section 21 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 was introduced to consolidate and amend the laws relating to weights and measures in India. [3] It aims to establish and enforce standards of weights and measures and regulate trade and commerce in weights, measures, and other goods sold or distributed by weight, measure, or number.
The Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976, along with the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985, was repealed and replaced by the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, which came into effect on 1 April 2011.
