The James Webb Space Telescope has captured new detailed portraits of 19 spiral galaxies filled with millions of stars and glowing gas and dust.
In response, new research determined [3] NGC 4622's spiral arm sense with a method independent of the previous work. The Fourier component method reveals two new weak arms in the inner disk winding opposite the outer strong clockwise pair. Thus the galaxy must have a pair of arms winding in the opposite direction from most galaxies.
NGC 3786 is an spiral galaxy located 107.5 million light-years [2] away in the northern constellation of Ursa Major. It was discovered by English astronomer John Herschel on April 10, 1831. This object appears to form a close pair with its peculiar neighbor to the north, NGC 3788 . [ 7 ]
NGC 2008 is a distant spiral galaxy located in the constellation Pictor. Its speed relative to the cosmic microwave background is 10,367 ± 11 km/s, which corresponds to a Hubble distance of 153 ± 11 Mpc (~499 million ly). [1] NGC 2008 was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel in 1834. [2]
UGC 3478 is a spiral galaxy, located in the constellation of Camelopardalis. [3] [4] Is is located at 128 million light-years from Earth. [5] It features a growing supermassive black hole (AGN) at its center. [6]
NGC 5068 is a face-on field barred spiral galaxy in the Virgo constellation. NGC 5068 is located approximately 22 million light-years away and has a diameter that exceeds 45000 light-years. [2] [3] Although no supernovae have been observed in NGC 5068 yet, a luminous red nova, designated AT 2020hat, was discovered on 12 April 2020 (type LRN ...
NGC 1365, also known as the Fornax Propeller Galaxy [2] or the Great Barred Spiral Galaxy, [3] is a double-barred spiral galaxy about 56 million light-years away [4] in the constellation Fornax. It was discovered on 2 September 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop .
