The BNXT League is a professional basketball league in Belgium and the Netherlands. The league is the first tier in both the Dutch and Belgian system, replacing the DBL and PBL . The inaugural season was the 2021–22 season , which started in September 2021.
The last team from Kortrijk to play in the Belgian top division, was IJsboerke Kortrijk during the 1970s. The biggest feat of the team was their victory of the Belgian Cup in 1976. The playoffs were introduced in the 1977–78 season, modelled after the American National Basketball Association (NBA) which already used the system. [1] The playoffs were part of the Eredivisie (later the Dutch Basketball League) until 2021, when they became part of the BNXT League, which is a fusion league with Belgium.
In the 2011–12 season Excelsior reached the semifinals and in the 2012–13 season, it finished 10th while missing the Playoffs. The club moved to the professional Scooore League, the first tier in Belgium, for the 2013–14 season. Excelsior received a C-licence, which allowed them to play with a lower budget in the league. [1]
On 10 December 2020, it was announced that the Belgian Pro Basketball League and Dutch Basketball League would merge to form a new multinational league. [2] All clubs from the Dutch DBL voted for, while 9 of 10 teams in Belgium voted in favor of the decision.
In the regular season, all teams play each other first home and away. After that first round the league is divided in two groups based on standings; in the first group teams ranked 1–6 play and in the second 7–11. After the split each team plays all others in its group once home and once away. After that the Playoffs are played by eight teams.
