Furniture Brands International, Inc. was a home furnishings company, headquartered in Clayton, Missouri. The company began in 1911 as International Shoe Company with the merger of Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Company and Peters Shoe Company.
Gerald White Johnson (1890 – March 22, 1980) was a journalist, editor, essayist, historian, biographer, and novelist. Over his career spanning more than seven decades, he was known for being "one of the most eloquent spokespersons for America's adversary culture."
When Ford & Johnson entered bankruptcy in April 1912, it had nominal assets worth $1 million. [4] In 1913, the Midland Chair & Seating Company purchased Ford & Johnson. [5] S. Karpen & Brothers acquired Midland Chair in 1916. [6] According to the historian Sharon Darling, the company was "one of the largest chair manufacturers in the country". [7]
At that time, Widdicomb Furniture Company as known for their spindle bed frames. William Widdicomb, who served as President, retired from the company in 1883. [1] In 1915, it was sold to Joseph Griswold Sr. and Godfrey von Platen. The company would merge with Mueller Furniture Corporation, becoming Widdicomb-Mueller Corporation, in 1950.
