In Book 5 of the Aeneid, Entelus responds to the challenge of the boxer Dares by throwing his caestus (boxing glove, or gauntlet) into the boxing ring. To "throw down the gauntlet" is to issue a challenge. A gauntlet-wearing knight would challenge a fellow knight or enemy to a duel by throwing one of his gauntlets on the ground.

The Gauntlet is a children's historical novel, written by Ronald Welch, and published in 1951. It is a time slip story set both in 1951 (the present day) and in 1326, mainly in Carreg Cennen Castle , but also in Kidwelly Castle and Valle Crucis Abbey .
The sleeve of the gauntlet is decorated with gold embroidery, edged with purple silk satin and a gold tassel. A replica of the glove, made in the 1870s, is in the collection of the Glove Collection Trust, a charity associated with the Worshipful Company of Glovers and is on long term loan to the Fashion Museum.
