The Navigators was founded in 1933 by the evangelist Dawson Trotman, who mentored United States Navy sailor Lester Spencer aboard USS West Virginia. Due to those efforts, 135 additional sailors on Spencer's ship became Christians before it was sunk at Pearl Harbor .
Trotman founded the Navigators in 1933. [2] He lost his life on June 18, 1956, aged 50, while rescuing a girl, Allene Beck, from drowning during water-skiing in Schroon Lake, New York . [ 3 ] [ 4 ]

Jerry Bridges (December 4, 1929 – March 6, 2016) was an evangelical Christian author, speaker and staff member of The Navigators, a Christian organization.Born in Tyler, Texas, United States, he was the author of more than a large number of books, including The Pursuit of Holiness, which has sold more than one million copies. In 1972, Hayner continued his education at Harvard Divinity School where he received his M.T.S. in Semitic Studies, and then one year later earned a Th.M. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. While in the Boston area, he served at the Park Street Church where he met Sharol Rhodes, whom he later married in June 1973.
