The Trail of the Eagles' Nests was first marked by Kazimierz Sosnowski. Since 1980, much of the area has been designated a protected area known as the Eagle Nests Landscape Park (Polish: Park Krajobrazowy Orlich Gniazd). The castles date mostly to the 14th century, and were constructed probably by the order of King of Poland Casimir the Great.

It was established in 1980, and covers much of the area of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests , marked as No. 1 on the official list of tourist trails .

Eagles Nest is set in the Gore Range which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is located 10 miles (16 km) north of the community of Vail in the Eagles Nest Wilderness on land managed by Arapaho National Forest.
