Monopoly money (symbol: ₩) is a type of play money used in the board game Monopoly. It is different from most currencies , including the American currency or British currency upon which it is based, in that it is smaller, one-sided, and does not have different imagery for each denomination.
The original American version of the board game Monopoly has two Get Out of Jail Free cards, with distinctive artwork. One, a "Community Chest" card, depicts a winged version of the game's mascot, Mr. Monopoly, in his tuxedo as he flies out of an open birdcage.
Well-known is the "Free Parking jackpot rule", where all the money collected from Income Tax, Luxury Tax, Chance and Community Chest goes to the center of the board instead of the bank. Many people add $500 to start each pile of Free Parking money, guaranteeing a minimum payout. When a player lands on Free Parking, they may take the money.
Some copies came with a card, imprinted with a code, which could be used for a special anniversary contest: the chance to win US $15,140, which is the total amount of money included in every U.S. Monopoly game. The board is foil-wrapped, and the center artwork is done in a 1930s-art deco style, as are the playing tokens, houses and hotels.
