Baghdad [note 1] (Arabic: بغداد, Baghdād) is the capital and largest city of Iraq, located along the Tigris in the central part of the country. With a population exceeding 7 million, it ranks among the most populous cities in the Middle East and Arab World and forms 22% of the country's population.

The modern city of Samarra was founded in 836 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tasim as a new administrative capital and military base. [1] In 2003 the city had an estimated population of 348,700.
Al-Za'franiya city (Arabic: مدينة الزعفرانية) is a neighborhood of Baghdad, Iraq. [1] It is located in the south-east of Baghdad at the confluence of the Tigris and Diyala rivers. It is the main southern entrance to the city of Baghdad, located on the main road that connects the provinces south of Baghdad.
