[2] The county was incorporated on June 25, 1789, and named for John Hancock, [3] the first governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The population was 1,352 at the 2020 census. [2] The village of Bryant Pond, on State Route 26 in the northern part of Woodstock, is the town's urban center and largest settlement.
