Red Springs is located in northern Robeson County. North Carolina Highways 211 and 71 are the main roads through the town, joining to form North Main Street. NC-211 leads north 12 miles (19 km) to Raeford and southeast 18 miles (29 km) to Lumberton, while NC-71 leads northeast 8 miles (13 km) to Lumber Bridge and southwest 12 miles (19 km) to Maxton.

The route was created in 1928 running from Maxton to Red Springs. In 1930 the route was extended, receiving a southern terminus in Rowland, and its current northern terminus with present-day US 301. The southern terminus of the route was again extended in 1931 reaching modern-day NC 41 just south of Fairmont .
NC 710 begins at its signed western terminus in a concurrency with NC 72 in downtown Red Springs, at the intersection of Main and Fourth Streets. Heading south, it splits from NC 72, which continues on to Lumberton. NC 710 skirts the western edge of Pembroke, connecting with NC 711, which goes through the town and UNC Pembroke.
