The township is in northern Muskegon County and is bordered to the west by the city of Whitehall.It is 16 miles (26 km) north of Muskegon, the county seat. U.S. Route 31, a four-lane freeway, crosses the township, with access from Exit 126 (West White Lake Drive) and Exit 128 (Business US-31 leading into Whitehall city).
Canton is an unincorporated community within the township, although the name often refers to the whole township itself. It is located just south of M-153 (Ford Road) at The Canton post office, first established in 1852, serves an area conterminous with the township itself—using the 48187 ZIP Code north of Cherry Hill Road and the 48188 ZIP Code to the south.
It was made a branch of the Whitehall office in 1954. [4] The office operated as a summer post office from 1897–1938, 1939–1942, 1944–1953, 1954–1965, and 1966–1999. [ 5 ] Wabaningo is no longer an acceptable name for delivery, although Sylvan Beach is an acceptable name with the Whitehall ZIP code 49461.

The Navigation Structures at White Lake Harbor area set of piers protecting the channel connecting Lake Michigan and White Lake, located at the end of Lau Road near Whitehall, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. [1]
