Selenium tetrafluoride (Se F 4) is an inorganic compound. It is a colourless liquid that reacts readily with water. It can be used as a fluorinating reagent in organic syntheses (fluorination of alcohols, carboxylic acids or carbonyl compounds) and has advantages over sulfur tetrafluoride in that milder conditions can be employed and it is a liquid rather than a gas.
Seleninyl fluoride can be produced by the reaction of selenium oxychloride and potassium fluoride. [3] 2 KF + SeOCl 2 → 2 KCl + SeOF 2. It can also be produced by the reaction of selenium tetrafluoride with water or selenium dioxide. [2] SeF 4 + H 2 O → SeOF 2 + 2 HF SeF 4 + SeO 2 → 2 SeOF 2
This exercise generates the diagram at right (Figure 1). Three molecular orbitals result from the combination of the three relevant atomic orbitals, with the four electrons occupying the two MOs lowest in energy – a bonding MO delocalized across all three centers, and a non-bonding MO localized on the peripheral centers.
SeOF 6 can also oxidize potassium iodide into iodine. [1] It explodes upon reacting with ethylene, and the reaction with perfluorocyclopentene produces F 5 SeOC 5 F 9. [4] SeOF 6 reacts with sulfur tetrafluoride to produce thionyl fluoride, thionyl tetrafluoride, sulfuryl fluoride, selenium hexafluoride and F 5 SOSeF 5. [4]

Like its lighter congener nickel(II) fluoride, PdF 2 adopts a rutile-type crystal structure, [2] [3] containing octahedrally coordinated palladium, which has the electronic configuration t 6 2g e 2 g. This configuration causes PdF 2 to be paramagnetic [4] due to two unpaired electrons, one in each e g-symmetry orbital of palladium.

The shape of the molecule is a distorted tetrahedron with the O-Se-O angle being 126.2°, the O-Se-F angle being 108.0° and F-Se-F being 94.1°. [3] The Se-F bond length is 1.685 Å and the selenium to oxygen bond is 1.575 Å long.
