XLRI – Xavier School of Management (XLRI or formerly Xavier Labour Relations Institute) is a private business school run by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India. It was founded in 1949 in the steel city of Jamshedpur and is the oldest business school in India.

Before founding GIM Goa, D'Souza earlier served as the Director of XLRI, Jamshedpur from 1982 to 1989. In 1987, he founded the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar and was its Director till 1993. GIM began its journey with one classroom of batch size 35 at the V. M. Salgaocar College of Law.

While returning to IIMA from XLRI after setting up the CHRD, Dr. Rao conceptualized along with Fr. E. Abraham a Professional body which was later registered as the National HRD Network. Dr. Rao became the Founder President of the National HRD Network and was also President of the Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Sciences (ISABS) 1986-89. [1]
