U.S. maternal deaths are on a worrisome trajectory. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that mortality rose from 861 maternal deaths in 2020 to 1,205 maternal deaths in 2021, a 40% overall increase.
CAUSES OF MATERNAL MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY. The 2018 report from 9 state MMRCs concluded that around 50% of all pregnancy-related deaths were caused by hemorrhage, cardiovascular/coronary conditions, cardiomyopathy, or infection. For non-Hispanic black women, the most common underlying causes of death included preeclampsia, eclampsia, and embolism.
For analysis purposes, we grouped maternal causes of death into seven main categories of direct and indirect causes: abortion, embolism, obstetric haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, pregnancy-related sepsis, other direct causes, and indirect causes.
