If you can connect your interests in theater, English and history to Vandy’s liberal arts curriculum, and talk about your involvement in these diverse areas (and how you can contribute to Vandy), your essay will be very strong.

I just submitted the application essay for the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship, and it looked fine when I submitted it…but the confirmation e-mail showed the essay without quotation marks (I used one quote), and when I referenced several authors’ novels, the 's from the author’s name (i.e. Kerouac’s On The Road was Kerouacs On The Road) were missing. But within that group, Vandy likely has the most merit scholarship money. Vandy says that about 1% of applicants will get offered one of their merit schollies (of which the CV is one). So the odds are quite low. But much higher than the odds of winning the lottery. Probably about 8% of enrolled students are merit scholar recipients.
It is a great program and makes the vanderbilt community feel a little bit closer. The main perk is the honors seminars, though. They are all taught by wonderful professors that specifically chose to teach seminars to honors students. These seminars can replace the other writing/general education courses that are required for a Vanderbilt degree.
