ed wallace Member Posts: 1,613. October 2002. I was in the Home Depot in Waltham Ma today and saw they now sell oil tanks now thats scary just what the industry needs Know it all home owners installing oil tanks and oil fired boilers with out any training. Welcome.
Most oil drivers like to see and the feel of an 2" fill and 1 1/4" vent .. Something to do with back pressure . and the sound of the whistle . All pipes pitch back down to the tank .. Added note .. 13" and 12" tank legs as to 1/4" pitch toward bottom drain .. Single filter after the tee ..
When you cut a enclosed vessel and create open spark it is always risky. The oil needs to vaporize in order to ignite and it is possible to do so with a saw blade. I have heard stories of them flashing and I use to cut them that way myself. I now use a 10 gauge nibbler and it cuts them without spark in about 1 minute.
279-300lbs. for a typical 275 gal. dry, empty, steel oil tank. Two guys can handle it o.k. Dimentional clearance, I assume, are o.k., also. But, you estimate 2-3 gallons of sludge. I hope your estimate is accurate. What if it's 4-6 gallons, or 8-12 gallons? What does 1 gallon of oil weigh? And , what does 1 gallon of sludge oil weigh?
Option 1: Pull off old valve and quickly screw on new shutoff valve using a drip tray under everything. Option 2: I've seen people use shop vacs to create a vacuum on top of tank to limit or eliminate oil spill from outlet. I read to use a vac that's not self-cooling since the air coming in will be oil fumes and can start fires.
A pex question. Unknown. October 2006. NFPA 31 standards do not list ANY plastic for ANY part of an oil tank installation. This includes Vent, Fill, connections, valves or delivery lines. As they say in the business, you can do whatever you want. NFPA31 has been written for everyones safety. wheels.
Minimum safe tank thickness. dh1989 Member Posts: 22. February 2015. I purchased an ultrasonic thickness tester to sound my 275 gal basement oil tank. I checked the bottom seam and am reading 2.1 mm. Top of the tank reads 2.2mm. House was built in 1968 and I'm not sure if the tank is original. I assume this is a 14 ga tank.
I have a 60 year old tank that suddenly started throwing sludge into the Beckett burner. Since it's November, the thought of dealing with draining down an oil tank with cold weather just around the corner didn't sound like a good idea. Further, no one would guarantee chemical treatments or cleaning.
If there is no way you will ever have a different fuel option, then get a new tank that will be the last one you need to buy. Steel tank with primer only has a 10 year warranty. the coated tanks have 15 or 20 year warranty. The Roth or Granby double wall plastic tank in a galvanized tank has the longest warranty.
Sticking Oil Tank Level Gauge. I have a Scully combination fuel oil gauge with vent alarm on my 275 gallon vertical oil tank. System is 30 years old. Recently the float level in the plastic tube stays at the bottom of the tube after I get a fill up oil delivery. The float level in the tube will begin to move if I unscrew the plastic tube.
