An old cafe house, Ruokala The experimental house by Alvar Aalto. Muuratsalo is an island in lake Päijänne, Finland. The northern part of the island belongs to Jyväskylä and the southern part to Muurame. It is located 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south from the Jyväskylä city centre and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east from Muurame.
The experimental house of Muuratsalo is located on the shores of Lake Päijänne. It was built as a summer residence for Alvar and Elissa Aalto during 1952–1954, [7] and used as the summer home by the Aalto family until 1994. Since then, the house has been acquired by the museum.
The idea of a separate Säynätsalo municipality appeared in 1922 and the island became its own municipality in 1924. Lehtisaari and the northern part of Muuratsalo were added to it in 1935. More land on Muuratsalo was transferred from Muurame to Säynätsalo in 1960 and later in 1980. Säynätsalo became a part of the town of Jyväskylä in 1993.
