In 1989, the state legislature authorized the Department of Veterans Affairs to build a new museum dedicated to Wisconsin veterans. The Wisconsin Veterans Museum opened across the street from the state capitol in 1993. [1] In 2001, the Department of Veterans Affairs opened a new veterans home at Union Grove, Wisconsin. [1]

Civil War physician and GAR member Dr. Frederick Marden was chosen to head a five-member committee to organize a Wisconsin veterans' home. Among Dr. Marden's innovative ideas put into action was the practice of allowing wives and widows of veterans to live at the home, as well as the idea of allowing members to live semi-independently in cottages.
Later that year they began work on three buildings: the Bath and Clubhouse (a.k.a. today's lodge), the caretaker's dwelling, and a garage. The project was a collaboration of the Forest Service, CCC men from away, and local men employed by the WPA; for example in February 1938 the project involved 108 WPA men and 30 CCCs.
Forest Lodge is a hunting and vacation retreat of the Livingston/Griggs family on the shore of Lake Namekagon within the town of Namakagon, Wisconsin. The complex consists of 16 rustic structures built from 1893 to about 1950. Since 1999 it has been managed by the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. [2]
