In 1864, Charles Sanford of Madison County, New York, purchased 213 acres (0.86 km 2) of land where the village is now located, along with 1,000 acres (4.0 km 2) of pine land. The site was first known as the "Salt-Spring Reserve", and was the location of the first salt well in the state.
The village of Sanford is in the eastern part of the township. According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 35.7 square miles (92 km 2 ), of which 32.6 square miles (84 km 2 ) are land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km 2 ), or 8.52%, are water. [ 1 ]

Michigan (/ ˈ m ɪ ʃ ɪ ɡ ən / ⓘ MISH-ig-ən) is a peninsular state in the Great Lakes region of the Upper Midwestern United States.It shares water and land boundaries with Minnesota to the northwest, Wisconsin to the west, Indiana and Illinois to the southwest, Ohio to the southeast, and the Canadian province of Ontario to the east, northeast and north.
