The guilder (Dutch: gulden, pronounced [ˈɣʏldə(n)] ⓘ) or florin was the currency of the Netherlands from 1434 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro.. The Dutch name gulden was a Middle Dutch adjective meaning 'golden', [1] and reflects the fact that, when first introduced in 1434, its value was about equal to (i.e., it was on par with) the Italian gold florin.
The Dutch monetary system overseas of a rijksdaalder – or rixdollar – of 48 stuiver was continued in the Cape Province by the British in the early nineteenth century. In Ceylon , the VOC issued coins during the 18th century in denominations of 1 ⁄ 8 and 1 duit, 1 ⁄ 4 , 1, 2 and 4 + 3 ⁄ 4 stuiver and 1 rijksdaalder.
The value of a Dutch silver coin corresponds with the theme of the coin. If the coin has a royal theme, then the face value is 10 euro. Any other subject and the coin will be of face value 5 euro. The same principle with the gold coins, which have face values of 10 euro and 20 euro. Sometimes also 50 euro gold coins are issued.
Copper duit coin from 1735, with the VOC monogram on the obverse and the crowned coat of arms of Holland on the reverse. The duit (pronounced) (plural: duiten; English: doit [1]) was an old low-value Dutch copper coin. [2] Struck in the 17th and 18th centuries [3] in the territory of the Dutch Republic, it became an international currency.
It became a company, 100% of whose shares are owned by the Dutch State. The Queen awarded the company the prefix Koninklijk (Royal) five years later, and the company was now allowed to call itself De Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt (The Royal Dutch Mint). [6] On 22 November 2016 the Royal Dutch Mint was sold to the Belgian Groep Heylen. [7]
