The 2007 Groundhog Day tornado outbreak [2] was a localized but devastating tornado event that took place in central Florida early on February 2, 2007. Early morning temperatures had risen well above average for the season; combined with increased moisture and a powerful jet stream, this created enough instability and wind shear for thunderstorms to rotate and spawn tornadoes.
The first severe weather event of 2007 was a scattered but deadly tornado event in the U.S. Gulf Coast region on January 4. Two people were killed in New Iberia, Louisiana , and 15 were injured. It was confirmed to have been an F1 tornado as all the severe damage took place to mobile homes.

The town of Sunfield, Illinois, about 65 miles southeast of St. Louis, was wiped out by one of the 25 tornadoes. It was later rated F5 after the Fujita scale was implemented in 1971.
